The Maltese government has recently launched its first initiative regarding blockchain technology to start issuing notarised blockchain certificates for professional and informal education. In this respect, Malta is the first country to use this technology for education certification. This is part of the government's vision to be a market leader in the implementation of this technology and to increase efficiency and transparency in public sector services.To implement this pilot project, a Memorandum of Understanding (“MoU”) has been entered by the Education Ministry and the international company Learning Machine.
Malta, first country to explore blockchain education certificates
This project embodies several milestones not only for the Maltese education sector but also for Malta as an innovative hub for innovative technologies that are revolutionising the world. Malta was the first country to take the plunge and became the first country to explore blockchain education certificates.
Alex Grech, a consultant at the Education Ministry said, “This is a new step we are taking and the eyes of not only the EU, but the world are on us.”
Empowering the learner
Employing blockchain technology, a decentralised database that keeps records of digital transactions in a transparent and secure way in the education sector is an unprecedented step that gives the learner the right to share his or her certificates with third parties without the need to ask permission from the issuing institution. The blockchain database will allow the institution and the learner to co-own the learner's certificate.
The three institutions which will be the first to grant certification through blockchain technology are: the Malta College for Art, Science and Technology (MCAST); the Institute for Tourism Studies (ITS); and the National Commission for Further and Higher Education (NCFHE).
