In the coming weeks Identity Malta shall be sending out a letter to British nationals residing in Malta with a valid residence document in order to apply for a 10 year residence permit. Until the process of renewal take place, existing residence cards shall continue to be valid until the new 10 year residence permit is issued. British nationals residing in Malta will be called to renew their current residence permit at the new expatriates unit in Msida whilst those residing in Gozo will be asked to renew their permit at the eResidence Unit in Victoria.
This is in view of the UK's withdrawal from the United Kingdom which is set to happen today the 31st of January 2020. In order to ensure a smooth transition, the Maltese Government has set out a legal notice regulating the immigration status of British nationals living in Malta. The EU and the UK has agreed on a transitional period which will last until the 31st December 2020 and can be further extended once by up to two years.
British nationals living in Malta
British nationals who are currently residing in Malta with a valid residence card will be entitled to continue residing in Malta. Such nationals will be called by Identity Malta in the coming weeks to apply for a new 10 year residence permit.
British nationals moving to Malta during the transition period
British nationals and their family members moving to Malta during the transition period (1st February 2020 - 31st December 2020) can apply for the 10 year residence permit after 3 months from the first arrival in Malta but before the 30th of June 2021.
