Residency Malta Agency, together with Identity Malta has launched a Nomad Residence Permit offering third country nationals the opportunity to work remotely from Malta.
Residency Malta Agency, together with Identity Malta launched a new residence programme in Malta called the Nomad Residence Permit. The purpose of this new programme is to offer third country nationals the opportunity to work remotely from Malta for a temporary period in line with EC Regulation No 810/2009 (Visa Code) and the Malta Immigration Act.
In light of the pandemic and advances in technology remote workers have increased over the years, and in Malta there are a number of EU citizens already working remotely. This new Nomad Residence Permit seeks to attract digital nomads who are non-EU nationals. The Nomad Residence Permit is not limited to any particular sector, and thus all non-EU nationals can apply for it irrespective of the industry they work in. The Parliamentary Secretary for Citizenship noted that digital nomads require a good connection in terms of flight connectivity and internet, benefits which Malta already offers.
Individuals meeting the eligibility criteria will be able to apply for this Nomad Residence Permit and relocate to Malta.
Eligibility
To be eligible, a non-EU national must prove that it is possible to conduct one's work remotely using telecommunication technologies. In addition, applicants must prove that they fit under any one of the three following categories:
- Work for an employer registered abroad,
- Conduct business activity for a company registered abroad, and of which they are partners or shareholders, or
- Offer freelance or consulting services to clients whose permanent establishments are in a foreign country.
To be eligible an applicant must earn at least €2,700 monthly (gross) and pay a government application fee.
Applicants must also show that they hold a valid property rental or purchase agreement and a health insurance policy covering all risks in Malta.
Duration of the Nomad Residence Permit
The Nomad Residence Permit will be issued for one year and can be renewed upon submitting a renewal application at the discretion of the local authorities. Applicants who are interested in residing in Malta for less than one year will be issued with a National Visa valid for 91 to 180 days depending on the duration of their stay.
To facilitate the process to enter Malta for the first time, third country nationals who require a visa to enter Malta, may apply for a Premium Visa offered by Identity Malta. Should an applicant decide to prolong one's stay further than the duration of the Visa issued, it is possible to finalize the process of application for a Nomad Residence Permit by submitting the documentation required.
Applications are expected to be processed within 30 days following receipt of all required documentation.
