There are various reasons which explain why Malta's shipping registry has become the largest in Europe and the sixth largest in the world. The Malta Tonnage Tax Regime, which was approved by the European Commission in December 2017, is amongst these reasons. Entities eligible to benefit from the Malta Tonnage Tax Regime are subject to a pre-determined flat-rate of tax which is based on the tonnage of the vessel in question, as opposed to the income generated by such vessel.

Malta has signed the European Blockchain Partner Declaration on the 10th of April 2018, together with another 21 countries.
