Theresa May has formally announced her resignation as the prime minister of the UK in a speech outside Downing Street.  After almost three years attempting to delivering Brexit, May said that she will cease to be the leader of the Conservative Party on Friday June 7.

The Task of Brexit

In her emotional announcement, May expressed her regrets in not delivering Brexit stating that she had done all that was in her power to do so with the objective of honouring the result of the 2016 referendum. She also expressed the honour of being able to hold the position of Prime Minister, serving a country she loves, despite the tremendous strain on British politics.

The announcement comes just days after May announced a new bill to action Brexit, which was met with criticism from fellow members of Parliament. It also comes just one day after the UK voted in the European Elections – Britain’s participation in which was not planned until recently as the original Brexit was set for the 29th March 2019, two whole months before the election.

A New Race

With Theresa May no longer leading Brexit, the race is on for her replacement.  With Boris Johnson likely to take May’s position, Brexit could face more uncertainty, as Johnson has been clear that he intends to leave the European Union, with or without a deal.

Corporations are thrown into new uncertainty with the threat of a no-deal Brexit back on the table.
